The vice president’s team is now working to overturn a rule implemented during President Joe Biden’s debate with Trump in June. This rule ensured that candidates’ microphones were muted when it wasn’t their turn to speak, aiming to prevent interruptions like those seen in the 2020 debates. Biden even famously told Trump, “Will you shut up, man?”
Harris’s campaign seems to be banking on giving Trump the freedom to speak, possibly leading him to undermine himself with a poorly timed interruption or by showcasing his dominant personality.
Trump’s team has expressed concerns, but the former president recently stated he would be content to do without the mute button.
